Official measurement protocol and accuracy results for an optical surgical navigation system (NPU)

Abstract: Image-guided surgical navigation is on the rise in many different areas of modern medicine and is already an established standard in some disciplines like ear nose and throat (ENT) or maxillofacial surgery. However, computer navigation has been known to result in displacement errors of up to 2 mm caused by the effect of the distance between the stereoscopic camera system and surgical tools [ 27 ]. Furthermore, the computer navigation approach does not take into account that the achieved osteotomy might not have a direct relationship with the guide because of the saw blade deflection mentioned previously or changes made on basis of clinical judgment after placing the guides.…”
