Offline cursive script word recognition ? a survey

Abstract: Abstract. We review the field of offline cursive word recognition. We mainly deal with the various methods that were proposed to realize the core of recognition in a word recognition system. These methods are discussed in view of the two most important properties of such a system: the size and nature of the lexicon involved, and whether or not a segmentation stage is present. We classify the field into three categories: segmentation-free methods, which compare a sequence of observations derived from a word imag… Show more

“…In document analysis, paragraph, sentence and word division operations should be performed respectively. If the processed document is a form that needs to be filled, the words to be recognized should be divided (Intrator et al, 1999). Interactive methods, on the other hand, are systems developed for recognizing the writing process by monitoring the coordinate movements of the pen while writing text with smart pens on devices such as phones and tablets with touch-enabled features (Ahmad et al, 2004).…”

“…This offline handwriting recognition has numerous applications such as postal documents automation [1], bank cheque processing [2], notes recognition [3], and production of digital libraries of historical documents [4, 5]. In general, there are three approaches to word recognition: segmentation‐based [6], holistic [7], and hybrid [8].…”

“…The interest devoted to this field is not explained only by the exciting challenges involved, but also the huge benefits that a system, designed in the context of a commercial application, could bring (Morita et al, 2003). Two classes of recognition systems are usually distinguished: online systems (Tappert et al, 1990;Namboodiri and Jain, 2004;Liu et al, 2004;Bahiraie et al, 2009) for which handwriting data are captured during the writing process, which makes available the information on the ordering of the strokes and offline systems (Steinherz et al, 1999) for which recognition takes place on a static image captured once the writing process is over. With the increase in popularity of portable computing devices such as PDAs and handheld computers, non-keyboard based methods for data entry are receiving more attention in the research communities and commercial sector.…”
