Ogilvie′s syndrome following posterior spinal instrumentation in thoraco lumbar trauma

Abstract: Objectives:To report unique cases of Ogilvie's syndrome (acute intestinal pseudo-obstruction) following posterior spinal instrumentation in thoraco lumbar trauma.Materials and Methods:A single centre retrospective study. We reviewed the surgical data of 420 patients who underwent thoracolumbar spinal surgery over a period of four years. Two patients who developed post operative Ogilvie's syndromes were identified. Results:The clinical presentation and blood investigations ruled out any infectious pathology. Com… Show more

“…ACPO has been observed in 1-2% of spinal or othopaedic procedures. In the field of spinal surgery, Ogilvie syndrome was reported after posterior fixation for thoracolumbar fractures, lumbar disc, cervical discectomy, lumbar decompression for stenosis, correction of spinal deformity, and lumbar surgery (8,9,18,23,24,25).…”

“…ACPO has been described in hospitalized patients with severe illness, trauma, or after surgical procedures (cesarean, abdominal, pelvic ,urologic , thoracic, neurosurgical, coronary bypass, orthopaedic surgeries) (1, 2, 3, 5, 6). ACPO has also been described after some orthopedic procedures such as hip, knee, lumbar and cervical surgeries (8)(9)(10)(11)(12).…”

“…Ogilvie's syndrome (OS) is a rare disorder of unknown pathophysiology characterized by acute dilatation of the colon in the absence of an anatomic lesion that obstructs the flow of intestinal contents 9,10 . OS has also been observed after spine surgery, especially in the lumbar region 11–13 . In this manuscript, we report a single case of a patient who developed acute abdominal pain following SCS implantation and subsequently developed Ogilvie's syndrome with lethal outcome despite immediate spinal decompression.…”

“…Increased drug resistance of bacteria is significantly reducing the therapeutic efficacy of antibiotics (Stewart and Costerton, 2001). Commonly, this resistance is augmented in bacterial biofilms, which can be described as bacterial communities adhering to abiotic or biotic surfaces and encased in a self-produced extracellular matrix (Chung and Toh, 2014;Hall and Mah, 2017).…”
