The aim of this study was to examine the cyberloafing behaviors of middle school students during the lesson or while studying. Within the scope of this aim, cyberloafing levels of middle school students were examined in terms of various variables. For this research; which was modelled with explanatory sequential mixed pattern, one of the mixed methods, 355 middle school students were selected through the convenient sampling method that is one of the purposive sampling methods. 24 students were interviewed for the qualitative part of the study. Quantitative data were collected via Personal Information Form, Cyberloafing Activities Scale; and qualitative data were collected via Semi-Structured İnterview Form. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 program and content analysis. When the findings were examined, it was observed that the cyberloafing levels of middle school students were low. However, it was determined that students perform moderate cyberloafing in the "accessing content" and "sharing" sub-dimensions within the scope of the sub-dimensions of cyberloafing. It was observed that the cyberloafing behaviors of the students vary significantly in terms of their age, gender, and grade level. It was observed that middle school students mostly watch videos, listen to music, download applications, text their friends, etc., and perform cyberloafing on music websites, TV series websites, movie websites, YouTube, Instagram, and social media. In order to decrease the cyberloafing behaviors of middle school students, various suggestions were made, including the cooperation of parents and teachers.

Students' problematic internet behaviour is often mentioned concept in the related literature. Even though the related literature concentrated on students’ problematic internet behaviour from various perspectives among different sampling groups, most of the studies focused on adults than younger groups. Therefore, the current study focused on exploring the secondary school students’ cyberloafing activity, cognitive absorption, and smartphone addiction levels according to the demographic characteristics and determining the relationship between smartphone addiction, cognitive absorption, and cyberloafing behaviours. Data were collected from a total of 808 students enrolled in secondary school in the 2020-2021 academic year. Findings showed that secondary school students’ cyberloafing activity levels did not significantly differ in terms of gender, school type, and grade level while they differed in terms of smartphone use time. Furthermore, adolescents’ cognitive absorption levels significantly differed in terms of gender, school type, grade level, and daily smartphone use. Students’ smartphone addiction levels significantly differed between genders and daily smartphone use time while they did not differ in terms of school type and grade level. It was found that there were positive correlations between cognitive absorption and cyberloafing activity level; cognitive absorption and smartphone addiction level; and cyberloafing and smartphone addiction levels. These results reveal the current situation among secondary school students while examining the levels of smartphone addiction, cyberloafing, and cognitive absorption and their relations.

Dijital teknolojilerin sağladığı çeşitli avantajlar nedeniyle eğitim ortamlarında kullanılmasıyla birlikte bu teknolojilerin olumsuz yansımaları da araştırmalara konu olmuştur. Eğitim ortamları ile ilgili yapılmış çalışmalarda, siber aylaklık ve bilişsel kapılma kavramları da karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Covid19 salgını sebebiyle eğitim kurumlarının zorunlu uzaktan eğitime geçmesi öğrencilerin teknoloji kullanımında artışa sebep olmuştur. Bu nedenle araştırmamızda Covid19 salgını sonrası Türkiye’deki üniversitelerde öğrenim gören öğretmen adaylarının siber aylaklık ve bilişsel kapılma düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında, küme örnekleme yöntemi ile Türkiye’deki yedi coğrafi bölge yedi küme olarak ele alınmış ve bu bölgelerde bulunan çeşitli üniversitelerin Eğitim Fakültesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerden ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemi ile 327 kadın ve 111 erkek olmak üzere toplam 438 kişiden gönüllü olarak veri toplanmıştır. “Demografik Bilgi Formu”, “Siber Aylaklık Ölçeği” ve “Bilişsel Kapılma Ölçeği” veri toplama araçları olarak kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre “gün içinde internet kullanım sıklığı” ve “internette en çok vakit harcanan kategori” değişkenleri açısından öğrencilerin hem siber aylaklık hem de bilişsel kapılma düzeyleri arasında anlamlı fark gözlemlenirken, “cinsiyet” değişkeni açısından sadece bilişsel kapılma düzeyleri arasında anlamlı fark gözlenmiştir. Ayrıca siber aylaklık ve bilişsel kapılma puanları arasında anlamlı, orta düzey ve pozitif ilişki tespit edilmiştir.
