Oil Recovery in Fractured Oil Reservoirs by Low IFT Imbibition Process

Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental study performed to investigate the effect of reduced interfacial tension (IFT) on oil recovery by spontaneous imbibition and gravity segregation. The results of the static imbibition experiments, in which a matrix block was surrounded by the imbibing fluid, showed that a minimum Bond number (NB-1) was required to increase the final oil recovery. However, the reduction of the IFT may increase or decrease the rate of imbibition substantially depending on the rel… Show more

“…Surfactant solutions are expected to change capillary imbibition performance on sandstone and chalky carbonates (Keijzer and de Vries, 1990;Al-Lawati and Saleh, 1996;Alveskog et al, 1998;Babadagli et al, 1999;Spinler, 2000;Babadagli, 2001Babadagli, , 2002Babadagli, , 2003. This change could be due to lowered IFT or change of the wettability from oil-to water-wet.…”

“…The use of chemical methods of improved oil recovery from naturally fractured reservoirs has been particularly neglected. Some laboratory experiments have been done to investigate the use of surfactants in fractured chalk (Al-Lawati and Saleh, 1996;Austad, 1994;Keijzer and De Vries, 1990;Schechter et al, 1991). However, the results of these studies are hard to interpret and to apply to field-scale predictions without a model that takes into account both the fluid flow and chemical phenomena in both fractures and rock matrix.…”
