Olfactory disorders: the patients' view

Abstract: The majority of patients with olfactory disorders seek medical advice before presenting to a specialist Olfaction Clinic. However, the majority reported receiving no or poor information about their diagnosis and prognosis. Considering the significant prevalence and potential consequences of olfactory disorders, it is our duty as specialists to improve the knowledge and communication of our medical colleagues about these diseases, so that patient education or referral can be improved.

“…30 Resolution of anosmia is unlikely in most cases because the majority of patients with olfaction problems receive from their physician no, unclear, or unsatisfactory information about their diagnosis and prognosis. 31 This is not surprising considering that few validated tests exist for physicians to use in the assessment of smell function. 32 The most common known etiologies for anosmia are nasal/sinus congestion, upper respiratory tract infection, current smoking, head trauma, stroke, and epilepsy.…”

“…Since curative treatment for olfactory disorders is not always possible, serious counseling concerning possible prognosis and evolution becomes more important [16] . With the present data we hope to provide valuable prognostic information when it comes to give possible outlooks for symptom evolution to patients with phantosmia.…”
