Oligomers and Pleionomers of Synthetic Fiber‐Forming Polymers

Abstract: The term "oligomer" is defined, and a survey of methods for the isolation and synthesic of cyclic and linear oligoesters, oligourethanes, oligo(acrylonitri1es) , and oligoamides is presented. The oligomers serve u vaBable function as model substances jou the investigation of many properties of the corresponding high polymers. ThiT ir shown using several exaniples finfrared spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, viscosity).[IS] I. Rotheand M . Rothe, Chem. Ber. 88,284 (1955); M. Rothe,

“…Uniform oligoesters are useful model compounds to study and understand, for example, the crystallization behavior of the corresponding high-molecular-weight polymers. The first pioneering reports describing the synthesis of uniform oligoesters date back more than 20-30 years and were published by Zahn 5 and Wegner. 42 Zahn et al prepared uniform ethylene terephthalate oligomers containing up to ten repeat units via a synthetic strategy that combined simple repetitive synthesis of elementary building blocks with fragment condensation to prepare the final oligomers of the desired length.…”

“…However, an increasing number of synthetic methods has become available that allows access to uniform and sequence-specific non-natural oligomers. In the broadest sense, uniform non-natural oligomers are of interest (i) as model compounds that can help to establish structure-property relationships for the corresponding high-molecular-weight polymers, [4][5][6][7] and (ii) as foldamers. [8][9][10] As model compounds, uniform, nonnatural oligomers can facilitate the analysis of comonomer distribution and stereochemistry of high-molecularweight copolymers and allow to study the influence of these parameters on e.g.…”

“…Pioneering synthetic work in this field was carried out by Zahn et al (Pénisson & Zahn, 1970;Zahn & Gleitsman, 1963), followed by Haslin et al (Haslin et al, 1980) and more recently by Brooke et al (Brooke et al, 2002). Possible PET oligomers can have free carboxylic group and hydroxyl group or both of them on the ends of the chain (Fig.…”
