Omegaven Improves Skin Morphometric Indices in Diabetic Rat Model Wound Healing

Abstract: The global prevalence of diabetes is estimated to be 200 million people, and it is likely to increase to 333 million people by 2025. Different cells, are known to participate in three main phases of wound healing. Omega-3 fatty acids influence cytokines and growth factors which affects the presence of inflammatory cells in wound area as well, but how this event specifically influences the role of fibroblasts, macrophages and angiogenesis in wound healing is not obviously understood. In this experimental study … Show more

“…Additionally, DHA enhanced TGFβ expression and the keratinocyte differentiation marker, involucrin, promoting tissue repair. In a separate investigation, diabetic male Wistar rats induced by streptozotocin underwent excisional wounds on their dorsal skin and received an intraperitoneal administration of Omegaven, a fish-oil emulsion containing EPA and DHA [102]. This intervention resulted in faster wound healing and improved skin morphometric indices.…”

“…In diabetic rat skin wound healing models, omega-3 PUFAs have been found to alter proinflammatory cytokine production, which substantially decreased the number of grade three mast cells on days 3 and 5 and the wound area by day 7 [ 61 ]. The number of fibroblasts capable of repair was significantly increased in the wound areas of omega-3 PUFA-treated rats, whereas that of macrophages was decreased, thereby accelerating healing [ 62 ].…”

“…O software Excel 2010 foi utilizado para entrada dos dados e confecção das tabelas. Além disso, estudos demonstram que o diabetes mellitus causa efeitos deletérios para o processo de cicatrização, tendo em vista que essa patologia gera redução na organização do colágeno e do suprimento sanguíneo, aumento da viscosidade do sangue e atrasos na infiltração de células inflamatórias (13,14) .…”
