OMG standard for integrating safety and reliability analysis into MBSE: Concepts and applications

Abstract: Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is gaining popularity in organizations creating complex systems where it is crucial to collaborate in a multi‐disciplinary environment. SysML, being one of the key MBSE components, has a good foundation for capturing requirements, architecture, constraints, views and viewpoints. However, SysML does not provide the necessary constructs to capture safety and reliability information in the system model. A group of industry experts at the OMG has been working since 2016 to de… Show more

“…An essential prerequisite for the impact analysis is the existence of a system model that contains relevant functions, system components, their relationships and specific associated parameters (Husung et al, 2021). Further explanations of the analyses that had to be skipped here due to the scope of the article, can be found among others in (Kleiner et al, 2017;Biggs et al, 2019;Albers et al, 2003).…”

“…A document-based functional FMEA (fFMEA) method uses spreadsheets and verbal communication that can be inconsistent, ambiguous, incomplete, inaccurate, and lack coherent traceability to the system model. A model-based fFMEA is a more efficient and effective method to allow early detection of failure modes, traceability, impact analysis through V&Vs capability, Risk Priority Number (RPN) automatic calculation (Biggs et al 2019), and lower solution costs. Figure 8 shows an fFMEA table for the LP-EGR System.…”

“…Recently, there has been a big push in different industries to integrate safety and reliability information into MBSE. (Biggs et al 2018) and (Biggs et al 2019) introduced a new approach to model safety and reliability constructs in SysML and tightly integrated the safety and reliability model with the SysML model. As there is a long history of various organizations integrating safety and reliability with MBSE using different methods and approaches, the Cyber MagicGrid has been augmented with a fifth pillar: Safety & Reliability.…”

“…Preliminary risk analysis can be performed by employing the FMEA (IEC 2006a) method during the problem domain analysis. Model-based FMEA in MagicGrid is done by following the approach detailed in (Biggs et al 2018) and (Biggs et al 2019).…”
