Myanmar has experienced considerable economic and social changes since its political transition in the early 2010s. Its agriculture sector has demonstrated rapid intensification and modernization. Agricultural best management practices (BMPs), e.g., drum seeders and laser land levelling, were introduced to rice farmers in Bago Region in 2012 to increase sustainable production and counter negative environmental impacts. The objective of this study was to determine the socioeconomic and agronomic changes due to the adoption of BMPs between adopters and non-adopters. Using a digital survey questionnaire application to collect household data, 200 farmers in eight villages were interviewed in 2012 and 2017. Data were analysed using uni- and multivariate statistics. Mediation analysis was utilized to evaluate the effect of the farmer group on rice yields. Overall, all farmers in this study experienced substantial positive changes over the course of five years in line with the national development efforts. Differences among adopters and non-adopters were not significant, but notable distinctions existed between cropping patterns. Rice-pulse farmers had higher yields ( + 0.4 t/ha), yet rice-rice farmers had larger cultivation areas, received higher agricultural credits, and had superior income levels. Nevertheless, rice yields remained low (<4 t/ha). Education was found to be an important predictor of yield. Hence, this factor is crucial for accelerating agricultural development in Myanmar. Improving extension services and knowledge transfer are necessary to expand the dissemination of sustainable BMPs and make farmers more resilient against the negative implications of climate change.

Many tropical and subtropical deltas are densely populated centers of agriculture that are threatened by sea-level rise (SLR). Local SLR can be amplified by anthropogenic activities that enhance land-surface subsidence, such as damming, fluid extraction, coastal deforestation, and levee or polder construction (Syvitski et al., 2009). Often, these alterations to the landscape are driven by the need to expand agriculture and aquaculture, and local stakeholders must balance economic stability against future declines in coastal resilience . Economically viable policies to promote delta stability require a fundamental understanding of the individual impacts of anthropogenic activities on sediment dynamics, yet it is often challenging to isolate the impact of a specific intervention in heavily altered regions.Extensive mangrove removal has occurred globally in the past century with the expansion of agriculture and aquaculture (Duke et al., 2007;Giri et al., 2011). This agricultural expansion is frequently accompanied by the construction of levees or polders, making it difficult to isolate the impact of the change in land cover. Levees allow a second or third round of crops to be grown in monsoonal deltas during the dry season when river or distributary water is saline . Unfortunately, levees also isolate the floodplain, significantly decreasing the potential for sediment deposition. On-farm conservation of crop diversity: A case study of landraces from Western Ghats of Karnataka, India

Landraces cultivated in four districts of Karnataka spread across Central Western Ghats, India were systematically documented. A snowball sampling approach was adopted to identify the custodian farmers. As many as 917 landraces belonging to 62 different crops from the target area could be documented. Sites were not uniform with respect to species richness and landrace diversity. The study could identify the critical factors that determine on-farm conservation as (i) suitability to regional conditions, (ii) relevance in regional cuisine and the local medicinal practices, (iii) cultural and traditional significance and (iv) the economic advantage. In order to promote the use of landraces and ensure their availability for future generations, custodian farmers were found to freely share their seeds. Factors unfavorable to on-farm conservation practice included the popularity of high-yielding varieties, inadequate market for native cultivars, inadequate dissemination of knowledge about landraces and their special uses, lack of interest among youth towards traditional agriculture, dearth of genuine seeds and relative low yields. The information documented in this study is expected to promote conservation and marketing of landraces as well as their use in breeding programmes.
