On Protomerulius and Heterochaetella (Auriculariales, Basidiomycota)

Abstract: The taxonomy of Protomerulius and Heterochaetella is revised based on DNA data and morphological evidence, and their type species, P. brasiliensis and H. dubia, are proved to be congeneric. As a consequence, H. dubia and related species, of which four are described as new, are placed in Protomerulius. Heterochaete microspora is also combined in Protomerulius, and the genus concept is redefined to encompass effused species with smooth or spiny hymenophore and monomitic hyphal structure. Psilochaete multifora, g… Show more

“…In addition, four new combinations are proposed. Previous studies [ 4 , 15 , 21 , 22 , 23 ] and our results demonstrate that the Auriculariaceae is rich in corticioid fungi. However, additional studies are needed to understand the full scope of their diversity in subtropic and tropic regions.…”

“…Our phylogenetic analysis indicated that the Calypso ‐associated Protomerulius OTU forms a clade with the corticioid fungus Protomerulius brachysporus , which is widely distributed in northern Europe, North America and East Asia and reportedly decomposes fallen logs and dead branches of various conifers (Spirin et al., 2019). Given that (a) the OTU sequence detected in this study is grouped with P. brachysporus , (b) P. brachysporus is the only conifer‐dwelling species in the genus (Spirin et al., 2019) and (c) both our study sites are dominated by the conifers, the mycobiont of C . bulbosa is probably either synonymous with or closely related to P. brachysporus .…”

“…In our phylogeny ( Figure 1 ), three Tremellochaete species, T. atlantica, T. australiensis , and T. japonica , are also closely related to E. candida , but they formed a separate clade with robust support; two other species placed in Tremellochaete, T. cerradensis and T. ciliata , are distantly related ( Figure 1 ). Tremellochaete may be a polyphyletic genus like other genera, e.g., Exidia and Exidiopsis (Yuan et al, 2018 ; Alvarenga et al, 2019 ; Spirin et al, 2019b ). In addition, Tremellochaete can be distinguished from Exidia by its clear and dense papillae on the hymenial surface (Malysheva and Spirin, 2017 ; Alvarenga et al, 2019 ; Figure 2 ).…”

“…Wang and Thorn, were described based on multigene phylogenies (Ye et al, 2020 ; Wang and Thorn, 2021 ). However, the genus is still polyphyletic in the phylogeny, and species of the genus are scattered in several genera of Auriculariaceae (Yuan et al, 2018 ; Spirin et al, 2019a , b ; Ye et al, 2020 ). Tremellochaete was reinstated to accommodate T. japonica (Yasuda), Raitv.…”
