On-Site Waveform Survey in LV Distribution Network using a Photovoltaic Installation

Abstract: Conducted electromagnetic interference has shown to result in misreadings of static energy meters due to non-linear current waveforms. Based on these findings it is of interest to survey waveforms that occur in typical low voltage distribution networks, and to which static energy meters are exposed to. Therefore, complex waveforms in a domestic photovoltaic installation are identified. Furthermore, discrepancies between the generated power, consumed power by the loads and drawn power from the grid are found. T… Show more

“…The acquired waveforms were analyzed in order to preselect and store meaningful data only. For that purpose, specific triggering settings were used based upon the pulsed waveforms of interest following the procedure in [18], which are amplitude probability distribution (APD) and discrete wavelet transform, which are strong indicators for pulsed waveforms [24], [25]. Furthermore, snapshots (instantaneous acquisitions) are made every 10 min.…”

“…Critics argued that the distortions used in [15] are rather extreme and are artificially generated in the laboratory and do not represent a realistic situation in typical households using CE-marked equipment. Recently, however, highly disruptive waveforms have been recorded caused by other household appliances [18], including a water pump [19] and in real onsite situations by electric vehicle (EV) chargers [20] or photovoltaic (PV) installations [21] that are beyond the present standardization and require time domain investigation [22].…”

“…Furthermore, in the framework of the MeterEMI project [20], surveys are performed in modern LV distribution networks. Preliminary results are shown including networks with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations [21], and PV installations [22]. This resulted in a vast repository of datasets comprising on-site current waveform measurements.…”
