On the Convective Coupling and Moisture Organization of East Pacific Easterly Waves

Abstract: Processes associated with the local amplification of easterly waves (EWs) in the east Pacific warm pool are explored. Developing EWs favor convection in the southwest and northeast quadrants of the disturbance. In nascent EWs, convection favors the southwest quadrant. As the EW life cycle progresses, convection in the northeast quadrant becomes increasingly prominent and southwest quadrant convection wanes. The EW moisture budget reveals that anomalous meridional winds acting on the mean meridional moisture gr… Show more

“…) and some have argued that it is essential for wave growth (Berry and Thorncroft, ). Rydbeck and Maloney () have made similar arguments for easterly waves in the eastern Pacific, with the additional proposal that convection forces the wave axis to elongate from southwest to northeast, a configuration needed to draw energy from the meridional shear. These views of moist barotropic instability contrast with that of Schubert et al .…”

“…Near and on the equator, MDF is enhanced in regions of zonal wind convergence where midlevel moisture and rainfall are enhanced. Further work is needed to fully explain the mechanism(s) of interaction between the MJO and monsoon disturbances, but our results are consistent with previous arguments for the growth of monsoon disturbances in moist and/or vorticity‐rich environments [ Ditchek et al ., ; Rydbeck and Maloney , ; Prajeesh et al ., ].…”

“…As it does for tropical cyclone frequency, the MJO might thus enhance MDF by creating a moist, vorticity‐rich environment [ Camargo et al ., ]. East Pacific monsoon disturbances (or easterly waves) have been shown to extract energy from the barotropic shear of the time mean state and are influenced by horizontal moisture gradients, with more favorable conditions for development occurring in the westerly phase of the MJO [ Crosbie and Serra , ; Rydbeck and Maloney , , ].…”
