Abstract:In recent years there has been a growing interest in the development and thermal-energy analysis of passive solutions for reducing building cooling needs and thus improving indoor thermal comfort conditions. In this view, several studies were carried out about cool roofs and cool coatings, producing acknowledged mitigation effects on urban heat island phenomenon. The purpose of this work is to investigate the thermal-energy performance of cool louvers of shutters, usually installed in residential buildings, compared to dark color traditional shading systems. To this aim, two full-scale prototype buildings were continuously monitored under summer conditions and the role of the cool shutter in reducing the overheating of the shading system and the energy requirements for cooling was analyzed. After an in-lab optical analysis of the cool coating, showing a huge solar reflectance increase with respect to the traditional configuration, i.e., by about 75%, field monitoring results showed that the cool shutter is able to decrease the indoor air temperature up to 2 °C under free floating conditions. The corresponding energy saving was about 25%, with even much higher peaks during very hot summer conditions.

Buildings are responsible for 40% of the total energy use and 36% of total GHG emissions within the EU. Materials science offers solutions that when combined can offer energy savings in building sector. In this study, high reflectance coating and thermal storage capacity are combined with the aim of improving energy efficiency in buildings. For this issue a multifunctional pigment having a phase change material adsorbed on its surface and a high total solar reflectance has been manufactured.The total solar reflectance of the pigment will make the paint to reflect the sunlight radiation in the infrared part of the spectrum reducing the amount of absorbed radiation.This high reflection provides a surface level effect as is a passive stimulus-responsive solution that acts with sunlight radiation.On the other hand, the thermal storage capability provides a bulk level effect as is passive stimulus-responsive solution acting by temperature changes, making it possible to use constructive materials as a thermal energy storage media. The preparation process is described and the pigment is characterized conveniently. The thermal performance of corresponding pigmented coatings was evaluated by a simulated experiment in which two boxes were covered with the coating containing the multifunctional pigment and traditional pigmented coating on their tops. The indoor air temperature and the interior temperature of the substrate were measured obtaining differences of 4-5•C.

Abstract:This study suggests an optimization method for the life cycle cost (LCC) in an economic feasibility analysis when applying energy saving techniques in the early design stage of a building. Literature and previous studies were reviewed to select appropriate optimization and LCC analysis techniques. The energy simulation (Energy Plus) and computational program (MATLAB) were linked to provide an automated optimization process. From the results, it is suggested that this process could outline the cost optimization model with which it is possible to minimize the LCC. To aid in understanding the model, a case study on an industrial building was performed to outline the operations of the cost optimization model including energy savings. An energy optimization model was also presented to illustrate the need for the cost optimization model.
