“…Hammill (1983) demonstrated the ability of Sparganium erectum to exert high retardation on discharge in a time-of-travel study in a reach of the R. Skerne, U.K., of similar width and gradient to the R. Tullamore Silver. The remarkable development of S. erectum, in the R. Tullamore Silver, within 6 months of completion of maintenance, echoes the concerns of Krause (1977) and Wade (1978) as to the real benefits of maintenance in weeded, lowgradient channels. In the R. Tullamore Silver, velocities were substantially higher in the open-water experimental site, in fully weeded conditions, than in the partially weeded 'open-water' areas in the other Sparganium zones.…”

“…Glyceria maxima is considered to be favoured over Phalaris in low velocity channels (Krause, 1977) whereas Phalaris can colonize a range of sediment types and tolerate flooding for short or long periods (Conchou & Pautou, 1987). The rapid development of Phalaris and negligible expression of G. maxima in the experimental site, compared to the more equal development of both in the standard maintenance sites, may be due to the substrate, depth regime and enhanced velocities in the experimental site.…”

“…The widespread removal of bankside trees in England and Wales, to assist maintenance and alleviate flooding, has been carried out largely in ignorance of any biological consequences. However tbe value of even these management practices has recently been questioned (Krause, 1977;Dawson, 1978). as bankside trees can substantially reduce the costs spent on removing macrophytes and preventing bankside erosion.…”

“…Krause, 1977;Dawson, , 1981Dawson and Kern-Hansen, 1978;Dawson and Haslam, 1983). Trees overhanging the channel limit light availability and so reduce aquatic plant Brookes (1988) growth (Templeton, 1984).…”
