“…We found a similar pattern with the negative associations of increased employment density ( Chen and Shen, 2016 ), and suitable pavement conditions ( Reynolds et al, 2009 ) with fatal collisions. Importantly, we also found a pattern that indicates that the presence of bicycle pathways is negatively associated with fatal collisions, which is consistent with what has been reported for high income-countries ( Marqués and Hernández-Herrador, 2017 ). Contrary to what we hypothesized, the LTS was negatively associated with fatal collisions.…”

“…Bicycling safety is an active research field recently enriched with multiple perspectives provided by different data analysis techniques ( DiGioia et al, 2017 ; Reynolds et al, 2009 ; Vecino-Ortiz et al, 2018 ). Studies assessing bicycling safety differences over time have used multiple methods, including the evolution of risk approaches in Seville (Spain) ( Marqués and Hernández-Herrador, 2017 ), longitudinal deaths analysis in the United States ( Cummings et al, 2006 ), rates per capita comparisons in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries ( Buehler and Pucher, 2017 ), and assessments of the impact of policy on risk and exposure ( Mooney et al, 2018 ). The findings in these studies indicate improvements in safety conditions when controlling for exposure variables and standardizing bicycle collision counts per bicycle trips or capita.…”

“…Launching the entire grid at once might have helped protect the bike lanes if Edmonton had a change in political power in the election that occurred in the first riding season. Previous research has shown that there are significant safety advantages for connected networks of bike infrastructure (Marque´s and Herna´ndez-Herrador, 2017). In addition, we observed that simultaneous broad-scale deployment of bicycling networks may provide the additional advantage of avoiding repeated social media controversy for each new phase of construction.…”
