On the Estimated Measurement Uncertainty of the Insertion Loss in a Reverberation Chamber Including Frequency Stirring

Abstract: In this paper, we present an improved model of measurement standard uncertainty (MU) of the insertion loss (IL) in a reverberation chamber (RC), including frequency stirring (FS). Differently from the previous model, the enhanced one does not require specific conditions on the parameter to be measured. Such an enhancement is applicable for all usable measurement conditions in RCs. Moreover, a majorant is derived, that is obtained under a weak condition on the coefficient of variation (CV) of the parameter to b… Show more

“…The MU, which is here understood as a combined and expanded MU [34], can be calculated by using the MUs of the parameters involved in the measurement model and the law of propagation of the uncertainties by considering type A and B uncertainties [34]- [35]. MUs of the involved parameters can be empirically achieved by measurements [8], as well as their distributions. The mean values of such parameters have approximately normal distribution.…”

“…In order to make the stirring process more effective, a combination of different stirring processes is used [6]- [9]; however a combination of FS and MS performed through metallic stirrer(s) only is the most common. Combination of stirring techniques, i.e., hybrid stirring (HS), is very important for RCs as it increases the number of uncorrelated samples thus reducing the measurement uncertainty (MU) [8]- [9].…”

“…The MU for SE can be calculated from each measurement model, by considering the MU of the single parameters in it included, as shown in [21,[31][32][33][34] for quantities different than SE. In [35,36], the MU of the IL including FS and statistical non-uniformity is also shown. The effects of non-uniformity are also addressed in [37].…”

“…In proposed models for SE, are included both ILs of single chambers and ILs between two chambers. The MU for the IL was generalised in [36]. That is, it can be obtained without the knowledge of the statistical distribution of the acquired samples for the transmission coefficient of the chamber or between the two chambers [36].…”

“…Reverberation chambers (RC) [6]- [8] are essentially electrically large shielded enclosures with high quality factor (Q) values. By utilizing multiple stirring techniques [9]- [14] to alter the boundary conditions, statistically homogeneous and isotropic electromagnetic (EM) field environment can be achieved within the working volume of the RC. Owing to this unique property, RC-based measurement of non-directional parameters including TRP can be efficient and accurate.…”
