On the implications of the virtual storyteller’s point of view

Abstract: This paper deals with the implications of showing the storyteller’s perspective when telling stories in virtual environments. The paper proposes an open and reusable architecture for the construction of virtual guides who tell stories about the worlds they inhabit from their own perspective. The system consists of two main components: the structure of a knowledge base to code the narrative knowledge about the worlds and a novel hybrid algorithm for the generation of narratives showing the storyteller’s viewpoi… Show more

“…Various AI approaches have been suggested, and some reviews are presented in [Cavazza, 2009], [Ursu, 2007] and [Riedl, 2006]. These techniques are predominantly aimed at generating narrative behaviour, leading to less structured and more emergent narratives [Ibanez, 2009], rather than applying pre-authored narrative guidelines to the automatic compilation particular narratives, which is our approach. Furthermore, the main bulk of interactive storytelling has been applied to generated not recorded content.…”

“…A main thread of investigation has so far focused on generated content, often involving intelligent animated characters (e.g., Ibanez et al [35]). Not to forget the use of interactive video as a basis for scenario-driven interactive tours, with additional mini-games for elaborating on specific topics or tasks that arise during exploration process [2].…”

“…Regarding consistency in virtual agents, some interesting results where found when evaluating the performance of a virtual storyteller in Ibá ñ ez et al (2008a). The authors had designed an architecture for the construction of virtual guides who tell stories about the worlds they inhabit from their own perspective (Ibá ñ ez et al, 2003).…”

“…The authors had designed an architecture for the construction of virtual guides who tell stories about the worlds they inhabit from their own perspective (Ibá ñ ez et al, 2003). They then researched the implications of showing the storyteller's perspective when telling stories in virtual environments (Ibá ñ ez et al, 2008a). More concretely, they carried out a study with users in order to test whether the users consider it significantly better or worse (in terms of several aspects related to believability) adding the virtual guide perspective to the guide discourse.…”
