On the influence of cold deformation on liquid metal embrittlement of a steel in a liquid zinc bath

Abstract: The influence of cold deformation on liquid metal embrittlement of a steel in a liquid zinc bath was studied. A typical construction steel was cold deformed with different degrees. The microstructure of the different material conditions were investigated as well as their mechanical properties at 450 °C in hot air. Tensile tests with different strain rates were made in a 450 °C hot zinc bath. For each specimen the reduction in area was determined and the fracture surfaces were studied. It can be shown that the … Show more

“…Under these circumstances, the corrosion-inhibiting Zn coating can melt and trigger LME of the steel substrate. Extensive investigations have been performed to examine the LME characteristics of such couples [287][288][289][399][400][401][402][403][404][405][406][407][408][409][410][411][412][413][414][415][416]. The main findings showed that the dominant fracture mode was Zn penetration along austenite GBs and/or twin boundaries, forming liquid metal films and causing both the formation of Zn-rich intermetallic compounds and phase transformations [399,408,411,413,415,416].…”

“…Hot‐dip galvanizing is one of the most effective and economic methods to protect materials from corrosion and widely used as surface treatment for steels in various areas . After processing in molten zinc, steel components exhibit excellent anti‐corrosion properties in corrosive environments like atmosphere, sea water, and soil.…”
