On the integration of model-based feature information in Product Lifecycle Management systems

Abstract: As CAD models continue to become more critical information sources in the product's lifecycle, it is necessary to develop efficient mechanisms to store, retrieve, and manage larger volumes of increasingly complex data. Because of their unique characteristics, 3D annotations can be used to embed design and manufacturing information directly into a CAD model, which makes models effective vehicles to describe aspects of the geometry or provide additional information that can be connected to a particular geometric… Show more

“…An entity is a person, place, or object that is considered relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, including the user and applications themselves". A context includes two kinds of information: domain specific and activity specific (Cassens and Kofod-Petersen, 2006). Domain specific information represents the working environment of the user.…”

“…Several approaches are worth considering to present relevant design rules information to the designer. For example, CAD annotations can be used to guide the designer while embedding this information into the CAD model for a possible reuse (Camba et al, 2017).…”

“…With the rapid development of digital design and manufacturing technology, the 3D model plays an increasingly important role in product design, manufacturing, maintenance and recycling [9]. Especially in the product design and manufacturing stage, the 3D model has gradually replaced the 2D engineering drawing [10].…”

“…The voice interaction system presented in this paper builds on the software architecture previously developed by the authors to manage extended annotations in CAD models [7]. The architecture provides a framework in the context of a Product Data Management (PDM) system for integrating Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI) into a 3D model directly from the CAD environment.…”

“…Considering the importance of design intent and rationale in collaborative design activities as well as recent advances in speech recognition and voice capturing technology, this paper proposes voice as an authoring user interface for 3D annotations to capture knowledge in engineering design scenarios and describes a software infrastructure that can support it. To this end, a voice transcription module was developed to enhance an existing 3D annotation system [7]. The module manages voice annotations and makes them searchable within a PDM system, which is used to provide knowledge retention and reuse capabilities.…”
