On the Nature of Polyimide-Clay Hybrid Composites

Abstract: The reactions of chemically modified smectite clays and organic molecules typically afford intercalation compounds with well-defined compositions and basal spacings.1 More recent studies of clay-organic reactions have led to the formation of true clay-polymer hybrid composites in which engineering polymers are encapsulated between smectite clay particles approximately 1 nm in thickness.2-7 Semial work by Toyota researchers has led to the discovery of several nanoscale polymer-clay hybrid composites, including … Show more

“…The dramatic lowering of permeability in the nanocomposites is due to the presence of dispersed large aspect ratio silicate layers in the polymer matrix as seen in other polymer-layered silicate composites. [26][27][28]61,62 The solvent casting technique used here to form the nanocomposite films can result in in-plane orientation of the silicate layers, which are impermeable to water molecules. This forces solutes traversing the film to follow a tortuous path through the polymer matrix surrounding the silicate particles, thereby increasing the effective path length for diffusion.…”

“…Polymer-clay nanocomposites have been studied extensively for several years, and it is now known that the fire properties, thermal stability [1] and [2], gas barrier properties [3], ionic conductivity [4], mechanical properties [5] and [6], etc., are all improved relative to the virgin polymer. Nanocomposites can be described as immiscible, intercalated or exfoliated depending on the type of dispersion of the nanomaterial in the polymer.…”

“…[1] These materials have shown enhanced mechanical properties, such as increased stiffness and strength, [2] thermal stability and flame retardancy [3] and gas barrier properties [4] relative to the pure polymers. There are two distinct nanostructures identified in these nanocomposites: intercalated and exfoliated/delaminated.…”
