The current interest in the health benefits of whole wheat grain has prompted breeders to further increase the concentration of antioxidants in wheat. The objective of this study was to investigate the variation in antioxidant content among Chinese wheat grains and the relationship between antioxidants and grain color and morphological characteristics. A wide variation was observed in the total phenolic, carotenoid and flavonoid content, as well as the antioxidant activity (AOA), of Chinese wheat varieties. Black wheat had the highest mean total phenolic, carotenoid and flavonoid content and the highest AOA, followed by red and white wheat. The grain color parameters were significantly negatively correlated with total phenolic, carotenoid and flavonoid content and AOA among all of the wheat varieties examined, and grain weight was also significantly negatively correlated with these traits. The same correlation between grain weight and antioxidant traits was also observed within individual groups of wheat, which indicates that grain weight may be used as an index for selecting wheat varieties with high AOA. Landraces had significantly higher flavonoid content than commercial wheat varieties. The results of this study may be useful for breeding nutrient-rich wheat varieties.

RESUMO: "Flavanonas isoladas das partes aéreas de Cordia globosa (Jacq.) Kunth (Boraginaceae)". A análise fitoquímica das partes aéreas de Cordia globosa, coletadas no município de Picuí, PB, Brasil, resultou no isolamento e identificação estrutural da 7,4'-dimetilnarigenina (0,025 g) e eriodictiol (0,015 g). Estas duas flavanonas são as primeiras agliconas, desta classe, isoladas no gênero Cordia.Unitermos: Cordia globosa, Boraginaceae, flavanonas, 7,4'-dimetilnarigenina, eriodictiol. ABSTRACT:The phytochemical analysis of aerial parts of Cordia globosa, collected in the Municipality of Picuí, State of Paraíba, Brazil, resulted in the isolation and structural identification of narigenin-4',7-dimethyl ether (0.025 g) and eriodictyol (0.015 g). These compounds are the first flavanones aglycones isolated from the genus Cordia.

This paper presents a review of the occurrence of tricetin and its methyl ethers, with respect to their occurrence in the free state. In addition to literature data, our tabulated survey also includes a dozen unpublished results. The review indicates that 5,7,3´,4´,5´-pentahydroxyflavone and its methyl derivatives are more widespread than was known so far. Their presence as aglycones has been proved in a good number of plant species belonging to unrelated families.

Abstract: Externally accumulated flavonoid aglycones have been found for the first time in Nonea species. They exhibit only flavones, one of thembeing the rare tricetin-4ʹ-methyl ether. Within the subfamily Boraginoideae, exudate flavonoids appear to be a rare character.
