On the reduction of 4d N = 1 $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ theories on S 2 $$ {\mathbb{S}}^2 $$

Abstract: We discuss reductions of general N = 1 four dimensional gauge theories on S 2 . The effective two dimensional theory one obtains depends on the details of the coupling of the theory to background fields, which can be translated to a choice of R-symmetry. We argue that, for special choices of R-symmetry, the resulting two dimensional theory has a natural interpretation as an N = (0, 2) gauge theory. As an application of our general observations, we discuss reductions of N = 1 and N = 2 dualities and argue that … Show more

“…To preserve supersymmetry the theories need to be topologically twisted on S 2 and the R-charges need to be quantised. This background has been studied in [39,40] and more recently in [16,41] and [55]. As in the twisted index case reviewed in section 3, the localising locus is parameterised by continuous variables Z in the Cartan and discrete variables in the maximal torus of the gauge algebra.…”

“…Alternatively one can assemble directly Υ 4d . For 17 In [55] it has been observed that by choosing an alternative set of integration contours the sum over fluxes truncates and, in certain special cases, only one term survives. In these special cases the S 2 × T 2 partition functions can be identified with the elliptic genera of N = (0, 2) theories.…”

“…We also consider a twisted dimensional reduction of the R 0,N theory and the E 7 theory to 2d N = (0, 4) SCFT [16,17]. Especially the E 7 theory describes the one instanton string of E 7 group, from which we compute its elliptic genus and compare with other results in existing literature.…”

“…By construction, observables of the (partially) topologically-twisted theory should be independent of the size R of the compactification manifold, and therefore one should be able to safely flow to the IR. A prime example of this procedure is the compactification of 4d N = 1 gauge theories on R 2 × S 2 with a topological twist on S 2 [12][13][14][15]. This preserves 2d N = (0, 2) supersymmetry along R 2 .…”

“…This preserves 2d N = (0, 2) supersymmetry along R 2 . Using this setup, it has been argued that N = 1 Seiberg duality in 4d implies N = (0, 2) triality in 2d [14][15][16].…”
