Ontological perspectives in higher education and particularly in professional education and development have focused attention on the question of the learner's being and becoming rather than on the epistemological concern of what and how they know. This study considers the formation of the professional self in the light of the requirements for professional practice. It raises the question of agency in relation to this formational process and considers the implications of the autonomy paradox which arises from the simultaneous influence of the sovereign self and the external authority of the profession on the formation of the professional self. This study considers a structural perspective on both of these matters and concludes with implications for professional education and development derived from constructive developmental theory and the notion of subject-object transformation.

Tarkastelen artikkelissa yhdysvaltalaisen public journalismin varhaisvuosien teksteihin sisältyvää kansalaisihannetta ja osoitan, että public journalismin kehitysvaiheeseen sisältyneet ihanteet ihmisen julkisuussuhteesta, ihmistenvälisyydestä ja julkisen kansalaistoiminnan merkityksistä muistuttavat olennaisesti eurooppalaista sivistysihannetta. Esitän, että keskeinen läheisyyttä selittävä tekijä on public journalismia linjanneiden kirjoittajien käsitys yksilölle kuuluvasta tehtävästä osallistua aikansa keskeisiä kysymyksiä koskevaan julkiseen keskusteluun. Toinen keskeinen tekijä on kirjoittajien käsitys kulttuurista, joka takaa mahdollisuuden ja juurruttaa ihmisyksilöihin halun orientoitua yksityisyydestä yhteisiä asioita kohti. Erittelen artikkelissa, miten public journalismin keskeisen innoittajan ja teoreettisen lähteen, John Deweyn, käsitys julkisesta kansalaistoiminnasta liittyy sivistystraditioon. Tutkimus perustuu public journalismin keskeisimmän kehittäjäparin, Jay Rosenin ja Davis Merrittin 1990-luvun alkupuolella kirjoittamien tekstien aatehistoriallista otetta hyödyntävään analyysiin. Artikkelin toisessa osassa tarkastelen public journalismin kontekstointia ja soveltamista 1990-luvun Suomessa, jossa yhdysvaltalaisreformin läheisyys sivistysihanteeseen jäi artikuloimatta. Esitän, että public journalismin sivistyksellisiä piirteitä kannattaa kehittää Suomessa nyt, kun kärjistynyt poliittinen retoriikka on ajankohtaistanut sivistyksellisen ihanteen toisia ihmisiä kunnioittavasta ja käsityksiä avartavasta keskustelusta.

Whereas present theories of transformative learning tend to focus on the rational and reflective actor, in this article it is suggested that spontaneous action may play a decisive role in transformative learning too. In the spontaneity of action, novelty finds its way into life, gains momentum, is respected by others and reflected by the actor. Such transformation processes are investigated both with the means of theoretical reflection and of empirical inquiry. Based on nine narrative interviews typical phases of transformative learning processes are identified. Owing to the comparative nature of the study, it was also possible to develop an age-related typology that overlaps certain phases of the transformation process. These empirical findings constitute the background against which the nexus of spontaneous action and transformative learning is reflected theoretically. Theories drawn upon include John Dewey's Pragmatism and George Herbert Mead's Social Pragmatism. Both scholars provide rich theoretical concepts for reflecting on the nature of that what so often eludes from the control of both educators and learners: the spontaneity of the beginning.
