On the use of end plates with circular cylinders

Abstract: 237order of magnitude as that of model A. Since buildings in model A have set-backs from the street, the open space between the second and third rows is wider than the corresponding space in model B. It would be presumed that ventilation in lightwells connected to the street space would have higher values in model A than in model B. Velocity measurements prove otherwise, however, as demonstrated in Fig. 3. It is further noticed in Fig. 3 that the velocity in the third row lightwell of model A decays with incre… Show more

“…Local effects due to the end plates are not measurable outside regions extending approximately 3.5D from each end plate. Fox and West (1990) established that "long" cylinder conditions occur at the mid-span only, when A = 7, and similar results are reported by Szepessy and Bearman (1992). Szepessy andBearman (1992, 1993) have also measured sectional r.m.s, lift coefficients for "long" cylinder conditions which were closely similar to those in the experiments reported by West and Apelt (1993).…”

“…In the light of this discussion, the agreement between the data obtained by the spatial averaging technique and those Fox and West (1990) 10,15,25 0.06 0.002 Szepessy and Bearman (1993) 6.7 0.07 0.0005 West and Apelt (1993) 25 0.06 0.002 obtained by direct on-line integration of pressures is quite good. The former data fall below the latter by 4-7% at…”

“…All measurements were made at the mid-span of the tested models which have aspect ratios about 10 based on the area. According to Fox & West (1990), the data are considered free from end effects. The models were positioned normal to the uniform free-stream, and the orientation of the perturbations was varied by rotating the model through the angle as shown in Figure 2.…”
