One Dimensional Photonic Crystals Using Ultrahigh Refractive Index Chalcogenide Hybrid Inorganic/Organic Polymers

Abstract: We report on the fabrication of wholly polymeric onedimensional (1-D) photonic crystals (i.e., Bragg reflectors, Bragg mirrors) via solution processing for use in the near (NIR) and the short wave (SWIR) infrared spectrum (1−2 μm) with very high reflectance (R ∼ 90−97%). Facile fabrication of these highly reflective films was enabled by direct access to solution processable, ultrahigh refractive index polymers, termed, Chalcogenide Hybrid Inorganic/ Organic Polymers (CHIPs). The high refractive index (n) of CH… Show more

“…[26] While the As and Sb polymers are stable towards oxidation, the Pp olymers are made air-stable by treatment with sulfur. [31] At elevated temperatures,S 8 and Se 8 undergo ROPt of orm linear chains;h owever, polymeric sulfur is only meta-stable upon cooling, and polymeric selenium is obtained as ac ompletely insoluble solid (known as gray selenium).…”

“…Surprisingly,w holly aliphatic organic polymers such as polyethylene or norbornene-olefinic co-polymers (Topas ) exhibit simplified fingerprint region spectra due to the presence of only cyclic aliphatic CÀCb onding of sp 3hybridized carbon atoms and have hence been used as thin LW IR-barrier coatings ( Figure 1a). “…Meanwhile introduction of sulfur atom in the polymer chain is beneficial to increasing refractive index (RI) of the resulted copolymer . The thusly formed high RI polymer is an important class of materials that have been widely developed in recent years for optical components due to their lightweight, high impact resistance, low cost and easy processing . Remarkably, polymerization with elemental sulfur (S 8 ) is a universal way to provide sulfur‐rich polymers with high RI, and these polymers performed well in Li‐S batteries, metal ion detection, IR imaging technology and self‐healing materials .…”
