One-phase synthesis of small gold nanoparticles coated by a horizontal porphyrin monolayer

Abstract: One-pot reduction of HAuCl4 in a DMF solution containing a porphyrin-cored tetradentate passivant gives horizontal porphyrin monolayer-coated gold nanoparticles, whose particle size is significantly smaller than that made by using monodentate passivants under identical conditions.

“…Many research groups have made considerable efforts to develop new synthesis methods for AuNPs using various functional protective agents. [1,4,6,[12][13][14] Meanwhile, despite its importance, the formation process of AuNPs is still unclear. This is because there are only a few effective techniques for in situ observations.…”

“…The porphyrin molecules harvests olar light as antennas and convert the light in energy. [31][32][33] An interesting study concerningt he photocurrent generation from ap orphyrin-ferrocenethiol monolayer system, using AuNP nano-antennas, has recently reported. [29,30] Some methodsf or immobilization on surfaces of sulfur-substituted porphyrins and metal-chelated porphyrins have been developed.…”

“…Among many different molecules that have been attached to nanoparticles, porphyrins, widely investigated macrocycles justly called "pigments of life" [7], emerge as attractive probes for studying nanoparticle-chromophore interactions. Quite a few reports have appeared dealing with porphyrin-functionalized nanoparticle systems, such as porphyrin-alkanethiolate-stabilized gold clusters [8][9][10], two-dimensional assemblies of tetrapyridylporphyrin-derivatized gold nano particles (AuNPs) [11], gold nanoparticle-porphyrin self-assembled multistructures for photoelectric conversion [12], zinc metallo porphyrin-functionalized nanoparticle anion sensors [13], water-soluble gold nanoparticles protected by mesotetraphenylporphyrin-thiol derivative [14], thiol-derivatized cobalt porphyrins on gold surfaces [15], gold nanoparticles coated by a horizontal porphyrin monolayer [16], gold(0) porphyrins on gold nanoparticles [17], free-base porphyrins with two thioacetate terminated linkers attached to gold nanoparticles stabilized by tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr) [18].…”
