One-step direct synthesis of layered double hydroxide single-layer nanosheets

Abstract: Layered double hydroxide (LDH) single-layer nanosheets were traditionally prepared through a multi-step exfoliation process which is very time-consuming and of low efficiency. Herein we report the preparation of LDH single-layer nanosheets through a facile direct synthesis method. By introducing a layer growth inhibitor, one can directly synthesize LDH single-layer nanosheets instead of LDH layered compounds. The inhibitor weakens the interactions between neighboring layers, thus preventing the interlayer grow… Show more

“…On the other hand, the ultrasmall thickness may allow a complete exchange of bulk lattice atoms if the exchange is to happen. The ultrathin Ni, NiCo (25 % Co), and NiFe (25 % Fe) LDHs were synthesized by modifying a method previously developed for the synthesis of MgAl LDH nanosheets . The samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma‐optical emission spectrometry (ICP‐OES, Table S1), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM; Figures S1 and S2).…”

“…For instance, a formamide/water mixture was also successfully used as a coprecipitation medium to directly prepare single LDH nanolayers in a bottom‐up strategy (rather than through a classical top‐down LDH exfoliation). The monolayer formation is explained by both the interaction between the carbonyl groups of formamide and the hydroxyl groups of the LDH layers, and suppressed electrostatic interactions between the layers due to the high dielectric constant of formamide . Similarly, fast coprecipitation in the presence of an excess of lactate anions followed by hydrothermal treatment enables the preparation of stable LDH nanolayers .…”
