One-year behavioral treatment of obesity: Comparison of moderate and severe caloric restriction and the effects of weight maintenance therapy.

Abstract: This study compared the weight losses of 49 obese women randomly assigned to a 52-week behavioral program combined with either moderate or severe caloric restriction. Subjects in the balanced deficit diet (BDD) condition were prescribed a 1,200-kcal/day diet throughout treatment, and those in the very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) condition were given a 420-kcal/day liquid diet for 16 weeks and a 1,200-kcal/day diet thereafter. The VLCD subjects lost significantly more weight than the BDD subjects at all periods thr… Show more

“…1,3 In a majority of trials with longer treatment and follow up-periods, VLCD-strategies have not been superior to programs combining hypocaloric diets and behaviour modi®ca-tion. 5,13,14 One exception is a study by Miura et al, 15 showing a greater weight loss at two years follow-up in a VLCD-group, than in a group treated with behaviour modi®cation and hypocaloric diet. In the present randomised study, we found no signi®cant bene®t of 12 initial VLCD weeks included in a dietary and behavioural support program, compared to the same supportive strategy alone after two years of active treatment.…”

“…On the other hand, to be able to further lose weight, one strategy could be to adopt a very low calorie diet. However, this type of diet has been associated with weight regain in a 1-year period upon return to a low calorie diet, 31 thus again suggesting that adaptive thermogenesis could limit the efficiency of weight reduction programs and also complicate weight loss maintenance.…”
