Onset and Maintenance of Angiogenesis in Biomaterials:In VivoAssessment by Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI

Abstract: DCE-MRI is appropriate to repetitively survey angiogenesis and integration of biomaterials in patients. It seems appropriate as a valuable indicator of treatment response or failure, with consecutive adaption of the therapy regime.

“…12 A better understanding of the mode of action is required to optimize tissue-engineering procedures for clinical applications. 13,14 As most of the previous clinical trials involved bone marrow derived MNCs isolation by FICOLL, this technique is currently viewed as the gold standard. 9,10,15 The FICOLL method can be an effective procedure for MNC-concentration that may be useful mainly in hospitals.…”

“…In the evaluation of tissue-engineering applications, MR is an attractive imaging modality due to the ability to serially evaluate morphological changes in engineered constructs. To date, MR has been used in clinical trials to monitor stenosis and graft failure in tissue-engineered pulmonary valves [ 44 ] as well as neovascularization within bovine bone matrix implanted in a sinus lift procedure [ 45 ]. Further application of MR sequences, such as phase contrast imaging for the evaluation of luminal flow and wall shear stress characteristics, could lead to further progress in the evaluation of tissue-engineered heart valves and vascular grafts [ 46 ].…”
