Oocyte development in Melanogryllus desertus (Pallas, 1771) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae): presence of Balbiani body*

Abstract: Oocyte development in the ovary of the black cricket, Melanogryllus desertus, was investigated. In the panoistic ovary of M. desertus, oocyte developmental stages based on their histological properties were classified as previtellogenic, vitellogenic, and maturation. Oocytes were encircled by follicle cells through the developmental stages. In the previtellogenic stage, a few vacuoles were observed just beneath the oolemma. At the beginning of the vitellogenic stage, subdivided into early-, middle-, and late-v… Show more

“…On the other hand, previous studies documented that the fat body consists of a mass of cells underneath the epidermis. In some insects, the fat body also surrounds the digestive and reproductive organs (Cakici, 2017;Han & Bordereau, 1982;Thomsen & Thomsen, 1974;Martins et al, 2011). Histologically, the fatty body varies significantly according to the different orders of insects.…”

“…The Balbiani body is a non‐membrane aggregate of mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and germ plasm ( nuage ), and its presence in the ooplasm is common among a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates (Chaudhry, 1952; Fishelson & Gon, 2009; Fusco et al., 2000; Lowry et al., 2005; Marlow & Mullins, 2008; Mazzoni et al, 2010; Oh & Houston, 2017; Żelazowska et al., 2007). However, the form of the Balbiani body differs between organisms; it can present as a single round or crescent‐shaped structure or as a structure consisting of a few Balbiani bodies (Çakici, 2017; Bradley et al., 2001; Jaglarz et al., 2003; Jędrzejowska & Kubrakiewicz, 2007; Yakovlev, 2016).…”
