OPC UA server aggregation — The foundation for an internet of portals

Abstract: Devices in industrial automation systems are becoming more and more intelligent. Consequently, functions such as server services are migrating into the device level. To solve the resulting connection mesh, this paper entails the concept of aggregation of servers connected to devices in an industrial automation scenario. The first section discusses the basic requirements for aggregation and proposes an architecture for server aggregation as a solution. The following section describes the building blocks of the … Show more

“…The result is a complex mesh of client and server connections. 21 An environment is created, where every client needs to know all communication information of the servers it connects to. If the address of one device changes, this information has to be shared with all clients connecting to this device.…”

“…Similar to [11], who propose a communication architecture for CPPS, where the different applications are running on the same machine but in different containers to ensure process isolation and data integrity on a real-time operating system, also the DF has to serve flexibility requirements close to a real-time clock pulse. The chosen protocol, OPC UA is an industrial standard that provides a rich service set [5] and serves as a communication middleware for multi agent systems [12]. An aggregation server can be used for monitoring and integrating different information models [12][13] [14].…”

“…The chosen protocol, OPC UA is an industrial standard that provides a rich service set [5] and serves as a communication middleware for multi agent systems [12]. An aggregation server can be used for monitoring and integrating different information models [12][13] [14]. An additional benefit is, that OPC UA can be easily incorporated into other software products like supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA-Systems), manufacturing execution systems (MESs) and enterprise resource planning systems (ERP-Systems).…”

“…Nevertheless, pub/sub communication could be used instead of MonitoredItems, thus reducing CPU usage and response times considerably as described previously in this section. In addition, OPC UA aggregation server could be used to consolidate the parameter information from different devices on one server . This would reduce the amount of necessary subscriptions significantly and decrease the risk on high CPU load on future field devices.…”
