Open Source OPC UA PubSub Over TSN for Realtime Industrial Communication

Abstract: OPC UA is a client-server communication protocol for industrial use cases without hard realtime requirements. The new PubSub extension of OPC UA adds the possibility of many-tomany communication based on the Publish / Subscribe paradigm. In conjunction with the upcoming Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) extensions of Ethernet, OPC UA PubSub aims to also cover time-deterministic connectivity. This poses requirements to OPC UA implementations that have traditionally not been regarded. We propose an approach to com… Show more

“…OPC UA Publish Subscribe mechanism was designed in the context of real-time requirements with focus on controller to controller communication, and easy integration with cloud architectures. Real-time publishing capacities have been achieved at high rates as stated in [ 27 ], the real-time synchronization of the process being managed at interrupt level. In the current implementation, the Subscribe process of the Gateway application aimed to comply with real-time behavior on application level and it have been used as part of a periodic exchange between an OPC UA Publisher responsible of distributing network messages regularly, with the final objective being for the VSOME/IP Client to receive information without missing any transmission cycle from the OPC UA Publisher.…”

“…1d and 1f shows the direct comparison of the protocols, including a simple TCP and UDP echo/ACK server implemented in C. It can be seen, that the raw UDP implementation is the fastest way for exchanging messages of small sizes, which are either acknowledged or echoed back, closely followed by TCP, which has a better performance for bigger message sizes. Excluding the results of TCP and UDP, the open62541 OPC UA Pub/Sub implementation described in [15] is the fastest middleware for almost all package sizes independent of the mode. eProsima Fast RTPS is in second place, followed by OPC UA Client/Server, ROS, and then MQTT.…”
