Operation and control of a dynamic voltage restorer using transformer coupled H-bridge converters

Abstract: The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) as a means of series compensation for mitigating the effect of voltage sags has become established as a preferred approach for improving power quality at sensitive load locations. Meanwhile, the cascaded multilevel type of power converter topology has also become a workhorse topology in high power applications. This paper presents the detailed design of a closed loop regulator to maintain the load voltage within acceptable levels in a DVR using transformer coupled H-bridge co… Show more

“…Voltage sags may be caused by switching actions associated with impermanent disconnection of supply, the progression inrush current associated with the commencing of induction motor loads or steady stream of fault currents due to short circuit faults which includes single line to ground fault in a power system (SLG). These kinds of phenomena would probably originate from the customers system or from a public supply network [8,9]. Voltage swells are brief magnifications in root mean square voltage between 1,1 pu and 1,8 pu at the power frequency amounts of time from 0,5 cycles in 1 minute.…”

“…Other experts have done research on topologies and control strategies utilizing low-voltage DVRs with a three-phase three-wire [6] or a three-phase four-wire [7]. High-voltage DVRs with the neutral-point clamped type [8], flying capacitor type [9] or cascaded type [10] have also been studied. Currently, the industrial application of DVRs is mainly in low-voltage.…”

“…These disturbances may cause sensitive loads to malfunction or even shut down the entire industrial process, which results in heavy production loss [1]- [3]. One of the major power quality issues is voltage sag caused by the starting of heavy induction motors and short circuit faults [4]- [8]. Voltage sag is a momentary decrease in RMSAC voltage from 0.9p.u.…”
