“…As the population is continuously exposed to new infections, the infection accumulates over time, resulting in high infection prevalence and intensities in older age groups. We have observed this previously for O. felineus [10]. This observation is also common in rural settings in Southeast Asia where O. viverrini is endemic [32,33].…”

“…According to a recently published Russian-language literature review, a number of studies focused on the occurrence of infection in Western Siberia some 20-30 years ago. They showed that O. felineus prevalence exceeded 50% among adults in some Siberian regions, such as Tomsk Oblast, Tyumen Oblast, and Yamal-Nenets and Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous Okrugs [10]. Our results show that present-day O. felineus infection prevalence in Shegarskiy district is still (at least) as high as indicated in previous reports (over 60%).…”

“…were determined to be 0.05% and 0.04%, respectively, in bile samples from 50 patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy [ 77 ]. Furthermore, bile samples of subjects with opisthorchiasis (bile duct infection by Opisthorchis felineus [ 94 ]) contained higher amounts of Verrucomicrobia (among other phyla) than subjects with gallstone disease without infection of O. felineus [ 93 ]. The presence of Verrucomicrobia was not specific to the Akkermansia genus and the exact relative abundance of Verrucomicrobia was not provided.…”

“…The present study is the second part of our work on the metabolomics of the host response to the O. felineus infection. The "Siberian liver fluke", O. felineus [12] forms a health risk for a population that is similar in size to the population in the endemic region of O. viverrini [13]. It is also known for its cancerogenic properties but remains far less studied.…”
