Compressive sensing (CS) has been proposed as a disruptive approach to developing a novel class of optical instrumentation used in diverse application domains. Thanks to sparsity as an inherent feature of many natural signals, CS allows for the acquisition of the signal in a very compact way, merging acquisition and compression in a single step and, furthermore, offering the capability of using a limited number of detector elements to obtain a reconstructed image with a larger number of pixels. Although the CS paradigm has already been applied in several application domains, from medical diagnostics to microscopy, studies related to space applications are very limited. In this paper, we present and discuss the instrumental concept, optical design, and performances of a CS imaging spectrometer for ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) stellar spectroscopy. The instrument—which is pixel-limited in the entire 300 nm–650 nm spectral range—features spectral sampling that ranges from 2.2 nm@300 nm to 22 nm@650 nm, with a total of 50 samples for each spectrum. For data reconstruction quality, the results showed good performance, measured by several quality metrics chosen from those recommended by CCSDS. The designed instrument can achieve compression ratios of 20 or higher without a significant loss of information. A pros and cons analysis of the CS approach is finally carried out, highlighting main differences with respect to a traditional system.

Compressive spectral imaging (CSI) is an advanced computational imaging approach to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) spatio-spectral data cube of a target scene through a single or a few snapshots. However, limited by the response range of the image detector, the existing CSI systems mostly work within narrow spectral bands, such as the visible or shortwave-infrared (SWIR) spectral band. The work band of the CSI system constrains the detection capacity for the targets under complex environments (such as rain, snow, haze, etc.). In addition, most of the current CSI prototypes lack engineering design for practical applications. This paper develops a novel, to the best of our knowledge, optical design scheme of a broadband CSI system with co-aperture coding to simultaneously realize visible multi-spectral imaging (10 channels) and SWIR super-resolution imaging (16×). The freeform surfaces are used to design the front-end reflective objective lens, thus significantly improving the image quality and spatial modulation precision of the system. By means of performance evaluation and tolerance analysis, excellent image quality and manufacturability of the proposed system are demonstrated.

Freeform OST-HMD system with large exit pupil diameter and vision correction capability

Compactness and light weight, large exit pupil diameter and distance, small distortion for virtual image, and see-through light paths are pivotal factors to achieve a better, wearable experience of optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMDs). In addition, light efficiency of the virtual image light path is an important factor for heat dissipation in HMD devices. This paper presents a new type of OST-HMD optical system that includes three wedge-shaped freeform prisms and two symmetric lenses. Based on a 0.71 in. microdisplay, an OST-HMD prototype with a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 45.3°, an F-number (F/#) of 1.8, an exit pupil size of 12 mm × 8 mm , and an eye relief of 18 mm is demonstrated. The maximum value of distortion of the final system is 0.6% and 0.4% for virtual image and see-through light path, respectively. The overall dimension of the optical system per eye is no larger than 30 mm ( width ) × 40 mm ( height ) × 14 mm (thickness), and the weight of the optical module including lenses, holder, and microdisplay is 12.8 g. The light efficiency of the virtual image light path is up to 50% higher than those of other OST-HMD optical solutions.
