Optical Method for Estimating the Chlorophyll Contents in Plant Leaves

Abstract: This work introduces a new vision-based approach for estimating chlorophyll contents in a plant leaf using reflectance and transmittance as base parameters. Images of the top and underside of the leaf are captured. To estimate the base parameters (reflectance/transmittance), a novel optical arrangement is proposed. The chlorophyll content is then estimated by using linear regression where the inputs are the reflectance and transmittance of the leaf. Performance of the proposed method for chlorophyll content es… Show more

“…Approximately 0.05 g of fresh leaf tissue was extracted with 95% ethanol to determine the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b). All samples were analyzed using a spectrophotometer (UV-1280, Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) at wavelengths of 663 and 645 nm [76]. The whole process was accomplished in a low-radiance environment.…”

“…1b). SPAD and CHL indices are similar because each instrument indirectly estimates the chlorophyll content in the leaf (Padilla et al 2018;Parry et al 2014;Perez-Patricio et al 2018), and there is a positive relationship between SPAD and the CHL index (Padilla et al 2018).…”
