Optical sensing of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid as a pyrethroid pesticides exposure marker by surface imprinting polymer capped on manganese-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe present communication deals with the synthesis of luminescent Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) anchored to surface imprinted polymer for the optical sensing of 3-phenoxy benzoic acid (3-PBA) in urine samples. The combination of sensing and surface functionalization not only improves the selectivity of the method, but also increases the optosensing ability of the material for non-phosphorescent substances. The developed material was utilized for the selective and sensitive detection of 3-PBA i… Show more

“…At present, the detection methods for 3-PBA include supercritical fluid chromatography, 14 gas chromatography, 15 high-performance liquid chromatography, 16 immunoassays, 17, 18 and optical sensing. 19 Among the above methods, immunoassay stands out because of its unique ability to routinely handle many samples and because it also does not require time-consuming procedures and sophisticated equipment when compared with the instrumental methods. Most of the previously reported immunoassays for 3-PBA are based on a monoclonal antibody or a polyclonal antibody 11, 20 and secondary or tertiary antibodies are required in the process.…”

“…Using 3-PBA in the analysis of pyrethroid metabolite have been reported with high sensitivity and accuracy in different real samples. However, they are not convenient and practical for field sensing and monitoring applications and require expensive instruments, highly trained people, and transport to a central laboratory.…”

“…In particular, functionalization with polymers enables the use of NCs as fluorophores for intracellular visualization 7 , in the gastrointestinal tract with strongly acid conditions (pH 1-2) 8 and in urine samples. 9 In the present work fluorescent composites from polysaccharide molecules and thiol-capped NCs were fabricated in an aqueous solution in order to develop a robust photoluminescent system suitable for biomarker and biosensor-based applications. Two different types of semiconductor NCs -core only CdTe synthesized in water and core-shell CdSe/ZnS synthesized in organic media, both with peak emission of about 530 nm -were used as luminophores.…”
