Optical single side-band Nyquist PAM-4 transmission using dual-drive MZM modulation and direct detection

Abstract: We present the design and optimization of the optical single side-band (SSB) Nyquist four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) transmission using dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM)modulation and direct detection (DD), aiming at the C-band cost-effective, high-speed and long-distance transmission. At the transmitter, the laser line width should be small to avoid the phase noise to amplitude noise conversion and equalization-enhanced phase noise due to the large chromatic dispersion (CD). The optical … Show more

“…After analog-digital conversion (ADC), the received signal is processed in the DSP. Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is utilized to mitigate the signal-signal beat interferences (SSBI) component [39], followed by a baseband down-conversion operation. The following digital signal processing contains serial-to-parallel (S/P) conversion and analysis filter bank (AFB) filtering.…”

“…By biasing at the quadrature, carrier power P c is permitted to pass through the modulator. The signal itself is modulated uniformly around this bias point, and for best performance should not extend into the nonlinear transfer regions close to 0 and V π volts [25], [26]. Typical demonstrations of Nyquist-shaped, quad-biased transmission require CSPRs of 9 dB and greater before any SSBI correction is applied [25]- [29].…”

“…In this paper, N-SCM 16-ary QAM (16-QAM) is used to compare against Nyquist 56 GBd PAM-4 and better understand the impact of CSPR on performance. For transmission links in the C-band, over which chromatic dispersion can be significant, single sideband modulation has been proposed as it allows for chromatic dispersion compensation [20]- [22], [25], [26], [29]. However, this is not necessary for intra-datacentre links, for which transmission distances of up to a few kilometres are usually considered.…”

“…On the other hand, although coherent detection can boost the link data rate with information carried on optical amplitude, phase, and polarization, it requires high-cost complex hardware including local oscillator, hybrid, and coherent receiver. Compared with above techniques, PAM-4 signaling based on intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) has superior advantages in terms of low complexity, low cost and low power consumption for intra-datacenter interconnects (DCIs) applications [16,17]. However, PAM-4 might suffer from severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) introduced by the imperfect optical/electrical components with limited bandwidth.…”
