Modern Pepper's ghost—“floating hologram”—systems generally use transparent screens called half mirrors or foils. this system must have the same screen size as the image size in order to display a large-sized image. Further, depth of the image can only be obtained from the distance between the screen and the display panel. These limitations can be overcome using holographic optical elements (HOE). HOE is made by recording as a refractive force of the lens with holographic material. In this study, the numerical values of the reconstructed images were theoretically analyzed through optical ray tracing, and the theoretical design of the reconstructed image size and depth plane was numerically measured and experimentally verified.

A sighting system based on the Galileo telescope structure generally suffers from the lack of a reticle, which poses great challenges to target aiming. In this work, a hybrid Galilean sighting system integrated with an augmented reality (AR) component is proposed, which produces an image of the reticle to serve as a reticle. The depth of the reticle can be adjusted flexibly to superpose with the image of the observed object. The designed system features a fourfold magnification, a large modulation transfer function ( M T F ) > 0.3 at 40 lp/mm, and a small distortion less than 0.3% in the full field of view. The superb imaging performance combined with the targeting function of the AR reticle renders the proposed design a powerful tool in the applications of target tracking.

Fabrication of a phase transmission holographic optical element in polycarbonate and its characterization

The phase transmission holographic optical element in silver halide holographic emulsion, especially for holographic collimator sights, is fabricated and the desired diffraction efficiency is obtained with very high transmission. One of the main drawbacks of these holograms are that they become dark by being exposed under sunlight, and this darkness drastically reduces the visible transmission and diffraction efficiency of a holographic optical element, hence it is not suitable for weapon sight application. To overcome this problem, we transferred a holographic optical element with a reticle image from silver halide into polycarbonate by using copying, electroforming, and recombination techniques. The holographic optical element in polycarbonate has many advantages; the detailed method of fabrication, transfer, and its characterization are presented. The very interesting result of diffraction efficiency variation with angle obtained in polycarbonate is discussed.
