Optically Active Microspheres Containing Schiff Base: Preparation and Enantio-Differentiating Release toward Drug Citronellal

Abstract: This article reports an innovative type of drugloaded microspheres prepared by precipitation polymerization. The microspheres consist of optically active helical substituted polyacetylene main chains and Schiff base side groups, in which the former provides helical chirality while the latter is used for chiral citronellal loading. Scanning electron microscopic images showed that microspheres with average size of about 1 μm were synthesized. Circular dichroism and UV−vis absorption spectra demonstrated that the… Show more

“…[16][17][18][19] Schiff base compounds are very important chemicals, which are widely applied for many applications (i.e., drug release, gas separation, and catalysts) because of their diverse properties (i.e., catalytic, magnetic, and biological properties). [20][21][22][23] Recently, the applications of Schiff base compounds for the ame retardant area has attracted much attention due to their good cross-linking charring ability at high temperature. 24,25 Zhang's work 26 revealed that the C]N double bonds in Schiff base compounds were able to generate nitrogen-containing hexatomic ring at higher temperature.…”

“…[ 106 ] Following the design and preparation strategy, more other building blocks may be utilized to provide their functions. For example, chiral pH‐responsive polymers, [ 115,116 ] chiral temperature‐sensitive polymers, [ 117,118 ] and chiral dynamic covalent structures (e.g., Schiff base [ 119 ] and borate structures [ 120 ] ) can be combined with chiral graphene hybrids to enable them to show stimuli‐responsivity. The as‐obtained smart chiral hybrids are interesting for diverse chiral applications.…”
