Optimal design of damping layers in SMA/GFRP laminated hybrid composites

Abstract: This work describes the optimization of the shape profiles for shape memory alloys (SMA) sheets in hybrid layered composite structures, i.e. slender beams or thinner plates, designed for the passive attenuation of flexural vibrations. The paper starts with the description of the material and architecture of the investigated hybrid layered composite. An analytical method, for evaluating the energy dissipation inside a vibrating cantilever beam is developed. The analytical solution is then followed by a shape pr… Show more

“…The advantages of using the damping capacity of thermoelastic martensite in shape memory alloys is discussed in [10]. In [11,12,13,14] martensitic SMA sheets were embedded into Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) beams to passively enhance the damping of the system. While the concept of hybridization for enhancing the damping of the structures dates back to 40 years ago [15], SMA hybridized systems are considered as newcomers in this field.…”

“…Despite several explorations on forced vibration analysis of SMA hybrid composite plates such as [15][16][17][18][19], nonetheless yet there are rare publications on dynamic investigation of SMA hybrid composite beams. In this regard, Ghomshei et al [20] examined the transient response of thick elastic beams with an embedded SMA layer using high order shear deformation theory.…”

“…weight, high strength, fatigue resistance, as well as corrosion resistance. Besides, its cost is lower than that of aramid fiber reinforced plastic reinforcement (AFRP) [6][7][8]. Accordingly, UHPC is used rather than ordinary concrete [9] and combined with GFRP to form a novel type of composite beam to enhance the rigidity and durability of the structure, as well as to enhance the durability of ordinary concrete structures in marine engineering.…”
