Optimal eco-labeling strategy with imperfectly informed consumers

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find the optimal environmental quality criteria for a strategic eco-labeling authority with three objectives (i.e. maximizing the aggregate environmental quality, maximizing the industry profit and maximizing the social welfare). Particularly, the authors investigate how the existence of imperfectly informed consumers affects labeling criteria determination and competition among firms. Design/methodology/approach A game-theoretic modeling approach was adopted in this p… Show more

“…Walter and Chang (2017) analyzed the welfare effects of environmental policies in environmental and consumer heterogeneity competitive markets using a vertical differentiation model. Fan et al (2019) studied the optimal ecological label selection problem for consumer groups that are divided into fully informed and partially informed. Zhang and Zhang (2021) segmented complementary markets based on the heterogeneity of consumer preferences for complementary products according to consumer consumption habits.…”

“…Environmental Management and Sustainable Development ISSN 2164-7682 2023 production chain participation (Crippa, 2019;Crippa et al, 2020). The role of supply chains has been addressed in studies as a requirement for enterprises to adopt mitigating measures at all stages of the product life-cycle (Acquaye et al, 2015;Fan et al, 2019;Wojnarowska et al, 2021). The articulation among manufacturing partners creates an atmosphere favorable to identifying priorities for general environmental impact reduction (Acquaye et al, 2015).…”

“…Following a global trend, organizational solutions propose improvements to cleaner production with less negative environmental impact (Roh et al, 2022;Wang et al, 2019). Labeling is used as an environmental strategy to create internal and external tactics that raise exposure for organizations, with consequences for reputation and operational performance (Andersen & Bams, 2022;Fan et al, 2019;Song et al, 2019;Yenipazarli, 2015;Wang et al, 2015;Wen & Lee, 2020).…”

“…Green consumption decision is seen to be affected by psychological factors like altruistic values, concern for the environment, environmental knowledge, skepticism towards environmental claims of manufacturers, attitudes toward green consumption, and intention to buy green products ( (Fan et al, 2019;Mostafa 2006;Peattie & Collins, 2 0 0 9 ) . “…Responsibly-managed eo-labels are important for promoting sustainability (Atkinson & Rosenthal, 2014;Daugbjerg et al, 2014;Fan et al, 2019). An obligation on the part of the certifying parties to minimize or eliminate the environmental footprint of a particular product and apply ethical sourcing policies (Brach et al, 2018;Nekmahmud & Fekete-Farkas, 2020) Lack of trust of consumers on eco labels is sometimes seen as countering the positive influence of eco-labels on GPI and GPB.…”
