Optimal maintenance scheduling for local public purpose buildings

Abstract: We formulate the maintenance scheduling decision as a dynamic optimization problem, subject to an accelerating decay. This approach offers a formal, yet intuitive, weighting of the trade-offs involved when deciding a maintenance schedule. The optimal maintenance schedule reflects the trade-off between the interest rate and the rate at which the decay accelerates. The prior reflects the alternative cost, since the money spent on maintenance could be saved and earn interests, while the latter reflects the cost o… Show more

“…Hence, maintenance scheduling, which is the timing of any maintenance activity in the calendar year, should be considered along with business objectives. In addition, the duration of the maintenance activity is an integral part of maintenance scheduling [52]. Subsequently, the identified criteria and their definition in this study are presented in Table 2 in alphabetical order.…”

“…The framework is life-cycle cost analysis, as discussed by, amongst others, Bogenstätter (2000), the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC, 2003), and Heralova (2014). As a point of departure, we use two recent papers that attempt to establish a general theoretical framework for maintenance of public purpose buildings (Hopland and Kvamsdal, 2016; Hopland et al ., 2019).…”

“…In the literature, there are several works that deal with optimal maintenance planning. For instance, some studies have focused on the schedule of maintenance activities: in bridges, in highway transportation networks [27][28][29][30]; on water distribution systems [31,32]; on power plants [33,34]; on other civil infrastructures [35][36][37]. Concerning the optimal planning of inspection in civil infrastructures, Berardi et al [38] implemented a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) to prioritize inspection works in a large real-life sewer network.…”
