Optimal Network Reconfiguration of Large-Scale Distribution System Using Harmony Search Algorithm

Abstract: Electrical distribution network reconfiguration is a complex combinatorial optimization process aimed at finding a radial operating structure that minimizes the system power loss while satisfying operating constraints. In this paper, a harmony search algorithm (HSA) is proposed to solve the network reconfiguration problem to get optimal switching combination in the network which results in minimum loss. The HSA is a recently developed algorithm which is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for… Show more

“…This comparative study shows that for the proposed algorithm, the minimum active power losses after reconfiguration are equal to 136.765 kW and the minimum voltage is 0.9348 p.u. These results are compared with those of the papers [3,4] and are better. The results obtained by the HSA show that the minimum active power losses after reconfiguration are equal to 146.39 kW.…”

“…However, since a power system has huge buses and transmission lines, it is difficult, time consuming and challenging to search for the optimal solutions to the FACTS allocation problem. This paper proposes an alternative optimisation method that combines a harmony search algorithm (HSA) [18][19][20] and an ant system [21,22] to determine the optimal solutions to the FACTS allocation problem. The HSA is a population-based random algorithm that is used for music improvisation, wherein musicians improvise the pitches of their instruments to obtain better harmony.…”
