Optimal Planning of Unbalanced Networks Using Dynamic Programming Optimization

Abstract: This paper presents a method based on dynamic programming optimization to design distribution and industrial networks with unbalanced customers. Low-voltage and mediumvoltage network customers can be three-phase (i.e., industrial and commercial) and single-phase (e.g,. residential and rural areas). Moreover, American medium-voltage distribution networks have single-phase lines (rural areas) and three-phase lines (urban and primary feeders). Optimization of an unbalanced network implies optimal assignation of s… Show more

“…Based on relation (12), either existing lines must be present in the network or replacement lines. Also, based on relation (13), the element built in year t will be present in the network in the coming years. Relations ( 14)-( 16) refer to the radial structure of the distribution network.…”

“…Several authors have presented models in which the infuence of reliability indicators is considered in the development of the planning methods, but externally.. In other words, only after reaching the planning methods with minimum cost, the impact of reliability indicators is evaluated [13]. Te disadvantage of this strategy is that, in planning methods, the low-cost balance between the resistance obtained due to the improvement in reliability and the reduction of investment and operational costs is not measured in a framework.…”

“…In a follow-up study, the authors [34] additionally differentiate customer types located in the distribution grid area, three-phase industrial-commercial and single-phase residential and rural areas, and grids comprising either single or three phase lines. Additionally, different conductor types, papering, power losses in lines, capacities, and voltage drop constraints are controlled for, while assumed loads are deterministic on all lines.…”
