Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch Using Differential Evolution Algorithm with Voltage Profile Control

Abstract: Abstract-This paper proposes an efficient differential evolution (DE) algorithm for the solution of the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. The main objective of ORPD is to minimize the total active power loss with optimal setting of control variables. The continuous control variables are generator bus voltage magnitudes. The discrete control variables are transformer tap settings and reactive power of shunt compensators. In DE algorithm the other form of differential mutation operator is used. It … Show more

“…Due to the rapid voltage fluctuations caused by the variation in consumer demands, there is need to device a suitable means of maintaining a stable load bus voltage, apparent power through the lines, as well as the reactive generator power [4]. Consequently, loss minimisation, as well as voltage balancing, needs to be adequately addressed in any power system network [5][6][7]. The two can be controlled by regulating and monitoring the magnitude of the bus voltages, transformer tap settings and capacitive reactive power injection while adhering to the units and system constraints [8,9].…”

“…Due to the rapid voltage instabilities caused by the variation in consumer demands, there is the need to device an appropriate means of sustaining a stable load bus voltage, apparent power through the lines, as well as the reactive generator power [4]. As a result, loss minimization and voltage balancing need to be adequately addressed in any type of power system network [5][6][7]. The two can be controlled by regulating and monitoring the magnitude of the bus voltages, transformer tap settings and capacitive reactive power injection.…”

“…Recently, meta-heuristic search methods become more popular in doing with ORPD. Several methods, most of them are based on the biological model like evolutionary and behavior in species, were used such as evolutionary programming (EP) [9], genetic algorithm (GA) [10], differential evolution (DE) [11], ant colony optimization (ACO) [12] and particle swarm optimization (PSO) [13]. These methods can improve the solutions for ORPD although it is more complex and slow in performance.…”
