Optimal Scheduling of Multiproduct Batch Processes for Various Intermediate Storage Policies

Abstract: In this paper, we suggest optimal scheduling strategies for serial multiproduct batch processes to minimize the makespan as an objective function. The strategies are formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) for various storage policies under consideration of nonzero transfer and setup times. The major storage policies for multiproduct multiunit batch processes considered in this paper are unlimited intermediate storage (UIS), no intermediate storage (NIS), finite intermediate storage (FIS), ze… Show more

“…For comparison we include the results from Kim et al [4], where similar problem with 8 products on 4 processing units was solved on IBM RS/6000 workstation using DICOPT++, and compare these results to performance of our program on this problem. The algorithm is simple enough to be implemented as compiled program written in Borland Turbo Pascal.…”

“…From this point of view, FIS includes both UIS and NIS policies. In addition, the MIS policy can be understood as the FIS system with ZW blocks inserted (Kim et al, 1996).…”

“…Production scheduling is an important area in chemical engineering, and it has received significant attention (Reklaitis, 1991;Shah, 1998;Pinto and Grossmann, 1998 (Kim et al, 1996;Jung et al, 1996;Karimi, 1988, 1990). However, very little attention has been paid to the multipurpose case when the FIS or CIS policy is contemplated.…”
