Optimal synthesis of double-phase computer generated holograms using a phase-only spatial light modulator with grating filter

Abstract: We propose an optical system for synthesizing double-phase complex computer-generated holograms using a phase-only spatial light modulator and a phase grating filter. Two separated areas of the phase-only spatial light modulator are optically superposed by 4-f configuration with an optimally designed grating filter to synthesize arbitrary complex optical field distributions. The tolerances related to misalignment factors are analyzed, and the optimal synthesis method of double-phase computer-generated hologram… Show more

“…Likewise, a complex hologram can be simulated with a double phase-only hologram [6], and displayed with a pair of phase-only SLMs. In some implementation, the pair of SLMs is replaced by a single device, displaying a pair of holograms and subsequently merging the reconstructed wavefront through a grating [7][8][9][10]. Although such approach is effective, the optical setups are rather complicated.…”

“…The reconstructed image will be disturbed by speckle noise introduced by the coherence of laser beam. Some approaches have been proposed to reduce speckle noise, like time-averaging effect [17,18], pixel separate method [19,20], short-coherent light [21], complex modulation [22,23].…”

“…Another method for complex modulation is called the double-phase hologram (DPH) [14] applications based on the double-phase method have been proposed to contrive more desirable complex reconstruction [15,16] . Song et al proposed an optical system for synthesizing double-phase complex CGHs using a phase-only SLM and a phase grating filter [17] . It should be noted that, although the diffraction efficiency is approximately equal to the off-axis method using a phase-only hologram [18] , the above DPHs suffer loss of half of the spatial resolution in the output complex field.…”
