Optimisation of a fermentation process for butanol production by particle swarm optimisation (PSO)

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The performance of three particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithms was assessed in relation to their capability to optimise an alternative fermentation process for the production of biobutanol. The process consists of three interconnected units: fermentor, cell retention system and vacuum flash vessel (responsible for the continuous recovery of butanol from the broth). The dynamic behaviour of the process was described by a non-linear mathematical model. Four constrained optimisation problems we… Show more

“…These SVM parameters mainly include the penalty constant , the relaxation factor , and the parameters in kernel function (e.g., the width in the RBF kernel function), and they affect the SVM performance more or less. Most existing approaches use leave-one-out (LOO) [10], gradient descent (GD) [11], genetic algorithm (GA) [12], particle swarm optimization (PSO) [13], and related parameter estimators. There does not exist a single universally effective method to select these SVM parameters.…”

“…The fermentation process for acetone and butanol production has been studied in depth by many researchers. However, the concentration of n ‐butanol produced in the batch fermenter is quite low (20 g L −1 ) because of toxicity problems 3. In addition, acetone and ethanol are also produced, which must be removed from the mixture coming from the fermenter.…”
